The Need in the Philippines
The Philippines is home to a large number of Grameen-style microfinance programs, many of which have become some of the largest poverty-focused MFIs in the world. The General Banking Law of 2000 paved the way for the regulation of banks to be engaged in microfinance. In addition, the National Credit Council’s National Strategy for Microfinance was drafted to create a viable private microfinance market. Our "deep country approach" in the Philippines is facilitated by a number of factors:
