The Philippines

The Need in the Philippines

  • 16 percent of the population live on less than $1 a day; 40 percent live on less than $2 a day.
  • Health issues include malnourishment (affecting 17 million people) and high levels of maternal mortality.

The Philippines is home to a large number of Grameen-style microfinance programs, many of which have become some of the largest poverty-focused MFIs in the world. The General Banking Law of 2000 paved the way for the regulation of banks to be engaged in microfinance. In addition, the National Credit Council’s National Strategy for Microfinance was drafted to create a viable private microfinance market. Our "deep country approach" in the Philippines is facilitated by a number of factors:

  • supportive microfinance regulation helped the industry become more streamlined,
  • the presence of a national Grameen Replication Program network (Philnet),
  • and the existence of a wholesale fund specialized in supporting microfinance programs (PCFC)

Grameen Foundation provides its partners financial and technical assistance, management information system (MIS) automation, and human resource development to help them achieve their respective business plans.

MFIs will also be able to access Mifos, Grameen Foundation’s innovative, open-source platform for information management. Details of our technical assistance to MFIs can be found in our Toolbox.

Grameen Foundation provides its partners financial and technical assistance, management information system (MIS) automation, and human resource development to help them achieve their respective business plans, as well as introduce potential new products such as Village Phone Direct.
