The Need in Honduras
Honduras is the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. According to the most recent Honduran census, the country suffers from 55 percent unemployment and even larger numbers of underemployment. More than 66 percent of the population live below the poverty line of $2 a day. Honduras has had a relatively organized political process in place since the early 1980s. It also has mixed macroeconomic conditions; growth has been strong, but inflation remains high. In rural areas, 61 percent of families live in extreme poverty (below $1 a day).
Microfinance is well diversified in Honduras and the country experiences a high rate of penetration at approximately 12 percent (penetration gives the percentage of microenterprises that actually use microfinance), but rural and poorer areas have been neglected.
