Egypt

The Need in Egypt

  • 40 percent of the population (24 million people) live below the National Poverty Line
  • All MFIs and government programs in Egypt reach approximately 75,000 borrowers, estimated to be less than one percent of the demand for services

Egypt is the second most populous country in Africa and the most populous in the Arab World, with a population of approximately 76 million people.

Where microfinance is available, there is evidence that women are slowly moving their families out of poverty. But demand far outstrips supply.
